The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has stopped food supply to the Internally Displaced Persons in Borno state since February, Governor Kashim Shettima has said.
Notwithstanding this challenge, the governor said the grace of God has seen them through.
He made the disclosure while receiving the acting Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, at the Government House, Maiduguri, the state capital.
Receiving the IGP, Shettima enumerated the multifarious challenges posed to people of the state by the insurgents, remarking that “since the 18th of February this year, NEMA never supplied anything to Borno state but God has helped us and seen us through the challenges associated with that.”
While describing Idris as an epitome of integrity, the governor noted that the IGP was the least in terms of consideration for appointment, based on political expectations from many quarters.
“I must commend you on your integrity and hard work which promoted you to this position because I know that only God was your godfather in this appointment”, Shettima said.
He added that he was highly impressed by the new architecture of national security which the new IGP and his colleagues in Immigration, Customs, Prisons and Civil Defence were working towards with a view to maintaining balance in the polity.
According to him, his take-off from day one had the cooperation of all the components of the Interior Ministry as it is composed now, and they have shown they can work together now, as against what previously obtained.
“I must admire the team work you people are displaying now with the new controllers general of immigration, customs, prisons and civil defence on your trail as brothers.
“Let me remind you that, the people of Borno were treated badly, even like a pariah state which is why things were so bad that twenty two local government areas of the state were overrun by those criminals called Boko Haram insurgents.
“I commend the armed forces of Nigeria for the progress made so far. We have crossed the Rubicon and we are on the path of sustainability of the peace,” Kashim added.
The governor, however, assured the visitors that “what is going on in Maiduguri is a temporary issue which will take some time to stabilise, but we will surely get there.”
Responding on behalf of the team, IGP Idris assured their readiness to support the state, which he said was dear to them.
He maintained that the security unit is a team and they all have a common goal to ensure that the country is safe for everyone.
The IGP further disclosed that they brought rice, Palm oil and several other food stuffs and medicaments for the IDPs, as the widow’s mite from the police.
A major highlight of the visit was the flagging-off of the free medical outreach treatment of the IDP’s by personnel of the Nigerian police at Muna Garage on the way to Mafa.
